The function of an electromagnetic chuck
2025-07-14
An electromagnetic chuck is a device that uses electromagnetic principles to generate magnetic force to attract, fix, or handle ferromagnetic workpieces. It is widely used in machine tool processing, mold changing, steel plate lifting, and automated production lines.
Core Functions and Application Areas
Machine tool processing and fixing.
As a machine tool accessory, the electromagnetic chuck is used on grinding machines, milling machines, planers, etc. By energizing to generate magnetic force, it fixes iron workpieces, supporting turning, milling, drilling, and other processing operations. It has the advantages of fast positioning and no need for mechanical clamping.
Subtypes: including ordinary rectangular chucks (used for surface grinders), rotary chucks (suitable for multi-angle processing), circular chucks (for circular table grinders), and chucks for grinding machines.
Rapid Mold Change
In equipment such as injection molding machines and ceramic presses, electromagnetic chucks can significantly reduce mold change time and improve production efficiency, especially suitable for production lines that require frequent mold adjustments.
Heavy Object Handling and Lifting
Used for lifting large metal parts such as steel plates and containers. For example, the flat hanging transportation of single steel plates in automobile manufacturing, or the use of a crane with an electromagnetic chuck for efficient handling (e.g., a new device can simultaneously adsorb 7 steel plates, increasing efficiency by 25%).
Technical Characteristics and Advantages
Strong suction and controllability: The DC power supply design ensures stable suction (ordinary chuck 10-12kg/cm², strong chuck ≥14kg/cm²). The adsorption force can be precisely controlled by adjusting the current.
High efficiency and safety: Compared with permanent magnet chucks, electromagnetic chucks do not require manual operation, and demagnetization occurs when the power is off, avoiding the risk of workpiece adhesion.
Limitations and Maintenance Requirements
Limited applicable materials: Only applicable to magnetic workpieces (such as iron and steel), ineffective for non-magnetic materials.
Heat dissipation and maintenance: Long-term use requires attention to cooling, regular correction of flatness, and regulation of voltage and current to prevent equipment overheating or damage.
